Why Apollo Education Chose a Private Cloud

After looking into AWS, Apollo opted instead for EMC subsidiary VCE

Apollo Education Group (APOL), parent company of the University of Phoenix, may be the largest privately-owned for-profit university system in the world. It’s also one of the largest consumers of IT in the world of higher education. Two years ago, Apollo explored a public cloud solution for its IT needs, but ultimately rejected that in favor of a private cloud based on a converged Vblock solution from EMC (NYSE: EMC) subsidiary VCE. In an exclusive interview, Apollo CIO Mike Sajor explained his reasoning to the Daily Cloud. Apollo has 207,000 students, and some 80%-85% of them get their education online. With revenue running at a $2.7 billion annual rate, and about 1,700 IT employees, Apollo is a large and innovative investor in IT products and services. “Our sole focus is connecting learners to careers, to transform their lives and their families’ lives and even the lives of future generations,” says Mike Sajor. With that end in mind, Sajor and his team began a few years ago looking at a next generation online learning environment based on cloud to support the delivery of massively-scaled online learning.
